This topic collects vegetables that do not fit Deodar's larger groups. They fall into three practical sets. Warm-season fruiting crops, okra, eggplant (brinjal) and bitter melon, need real warmth to germinate and grow. Cool-season leaf and bulb crops, lettuce, endive, celery, Swiss chard and onion, germinate in cool soil and suffer in heat. Perennials, asparagus and globe artichoke, are raised from seed in the first year and crop for several years after. Garlic is also listed, though it is normally planted from cloves or bulbils rather than true seed.
