Germination temperature
Warm: about 30 °C (86 °F) gave the best germination in trials; almost none at 10 °C (50 °F).

Ashwagandha is a hardy, drought-tolerant shrubby herb grown in India as a late rainy-season crop for its roots. Its small seed needs warmth to sprout, then the plant prefers dry conditions and dislikes wet feet.
Warm: about 30 °C (86 °F) gave the best germination in trials; almost none at 10 °C (50 °F).
Shallow: 1-3 cm (0.4-1.2 in) in the field; in a nursery bed cover thinly with sand.
About 5-7 days in a warm nursery bed; around 9 days in a field trial in Hyderabad.
Full sun; the crop needs a relatively dry growing period.
Not needed for home growers; sow fresh, clean seed.
Either: line-sow in the field, or raise a nursery and transplant at about 35 days.
Use clean, healthy seed. Seedling rot and blight are the main early problems, so Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) guidance treats seed with a fungicide before sowing; follow your local plant-protection advice, and in any case start with disease-free seed and a well-drained bed.
Not needed. Ashwagandha seed has no hard coat that must be broken.
Not needed. This is a warm-season sowing; cold treatment does not help.
Optional. In a Maharashtra (MPKV, Rahuri) study, soaking seed in a gibberellic acid solution for 6 hours improved germination, emergence speed and root yield compared with untreated seed. Plain-water soaking was not the tested treatment, and untreated seed still germinates well in warm soil, so home growers can sow dry seed.
Warmth decides success. In a three-year test, germination averaged about 95% at 30 °C (86 °F), against less than 1% at 10 °C (50 °F). A seed-testing study used 25 °C (77 °F). In India this is why sowing is done in the warm rains; in cooler climates start seed indoors on a warm windowsill or heat mat.
TNAU recommends 1-3 cm (0.4-1.2 in) for line sowing. In nursery beds, sow thinly and cover with a light layer of sand rather than heavy soil.
Light, well-drained soil: sandy loam or light red soil, slightly alkaline (pH 7.5-8.0) is ideal, although black soils are also used. For trays, mix compost with sand.
Keep the seedbed just moist until emergence, then water sparingly. Excess water harms the crop, and seedling rot is worst in hot, humid, waterlogged conditions.
Give seedlings full sun as soon as they emerge to keep them compact.
About 5-7 days in a prepared nursery (TNAU). In an open-field trial in Hyderabad, seed sown on 15 August took about 9 days and reached only about 43% germination, so expect slower, patchier emergence outdoors than in trays.
Move nursery seedlings at about 35 days old. TNAU suggests ridges 60 cm (24 in) apart with plants 30 cm (12 in) apart; 45 x 30 cm (18 x 12 in) is also used. Water lightly once after planting.
Thin line-sown crops by hand 25-30 days after sowing, to roughly 8-10 cm (3-4 in) between plants in rows 20-25 cm (8-10 in) apart for a dense root crop. Weed at 20-25 days and again about three weeks later. In pots, keep one plant per deep container so the root can develop.
Cause: seedling rot and blight, worst in hot, humid weather and wet soil. Fix: use disease-free seed, sow thinly, ensure drainage, rotate the bed, and water less.
Cause: cold soil. Germination falls almost to zero near 10 °C (50 °F). Fix: sow only when it is warm, or germinate indoors at 25-30 °C (77-86 °F).
Cause: hadda (epilachna) beetles and their larvae, which can strip foliage and reduce root yield. Fix: hand-pick beetles and larvae early and follow integrated pest management advice from your local extension service.
Cause: heavy, waterlogged soil or overcrowding. Fix: grow in light, well-drained soil, thin to the recommended spacing, and avoid overwatering.
In India ashwagandha is sown in the late rainy (kharif) season: TNAU raises nurseries in June-July, and in the Hyderabad trial a 15 August sowing germinated faster and better than 30 August. One or two winter showers help root development.
The crop suits areas with 500-750 mm of rain and tolerates about 20-38 °C. TNAU uses only modest feeding (farmyard manure plus 15 kg N and 15 kg P per hectare); in a garden, compost dug into the bed is enough.
Researchers in south-eastern Poland raised ashwagandha successfully outdoors as an annual crop; start it warm indoors and plant out after frost.
Flowering begins around December in India. Roots are dug 150-180 days after sowing, in January-March, when leaves dry and berries turn yellow-red. Dig when the soil is moist so roots lift whole.
Pick ripe berries, dry them, and crush them to release the seed.
Sow ashwagandha in warm weather for a hardy, low-water root crop.
In the late rainy season. TNAU raises nurseries in June-July; a Hyderabad trial found mid-August sowing better than end of August. The seed needs warmth to germinate.
Usually cold or waterlogged soil. Trials show germination close to zero at 10 °C (50 °F) and about 95% at 30 °C (86 °F). Sow shallow in a warm, well-drained bed.
About 150-180 days after sowing, when the leaves dry and the berries turn yellow-red.
Yes, as one plant per deep pot in light, sandy, well-drained mix in full sun. Water sparingly; wet soil causes rot.
