Germination temperature
Best at 20-25 °C (68-77 °F); clearly lower at 30 °C (86 °F).

Psyllium, or isabgol, is a short rabi crop of north Gujarat and Rajasthan, sown into cool, dry winter weather and harvested about four months later. Its seed is small and coated in mucilage, and rain or heavy dew at maturity makes the ripe seed shatter, so sowing date and a dry finish decide the harvest.
Best at 20-25 °C (68-77 °F); clearly lower at 30 °C (86 °F).
Very shallow: 0-5 mm (0-0.2 in).
Seed tests count germination between day 3 and day 8 at 20-25 °C.
No special light need is reported; cover thinly. The crop needs full sun.
Not needed; sow dry seed.
Direct sow in rows or broadcast.
Use clean, dry seed from the last season. The seed is coated in mucilage that swells into a gel when wet; mixing the seed with dry fine sand helps spread it evenly by hand.
Not needed. Water enters the seed easily.
Not needed. Isabgol is sown into cooling winter soil and needs no cold treatment.
Not recommended. Wet seed turns slimy and clumps. In laboratory tests a 0.1% potassium nitrate treatment raised germination from 67% to 79%, but this is a seed-testing method, not a field necessity.
Germination is best between 20 and 25 °C (68-77 °F). In an Indian seed-testing study, mean germination was about 55% at 20 °C but only about 31% at 30 °C, so wait for the post-monsoon heat to ease before sowing.
Sow on the surface or just under it, at 0-5 mm (0-0.2 in), and cover by light raking. Deep sowing is a common cause of a poor stand.
Well-drained soils; the best yields are reported on medium-textured soils, and an Indian trial also succeeded on shallow black soil. The seedbed should be fine and level.
Irrigate lightly right after sowing and keep the surface moist until emergence. Avoid heavy flooding, which can wash the small seed into patches.
No special light requirement is reported for isabgol seed. A thin soil cover, within the 0-5 mm sowing depth, keeps the seed in contact with moist soil.
Under good conditions germination is quick; standard seed tests take a first count at 3 days and a final count at 8 days.
Not usual. Isabgol is direct-sown; in a Madhya Pradesh trial, line sowing in rows 20 cm (8 in) apart out-yielded broadcasting.
Keep the young crop weed-free, as seedlings are small. In the same trial the crop was irrigated six times over its 120-day season.
Cause: rain, heavy dew or even cloudy, damp weather at maturity. In an Australian trial, plots hit by rain yielded only 64% of their pre-rain potential. Fix: sow so the crop ripens in dry, sunny weather, and harvest promptly.
Cause: wetting at maturity. The same trial found the husk's water-absorbing capacity dropped by about 15-20% after rain. Fix: harvest before forecast rain whenever possible.
Cause: seed sown too deep, sown in heat above about 30 °C (86 °F), or washed by heavy irrigation. Fix: sow shallow in cool weather and irrigate lightly.
Cause: isabgol is suited to dry winters; regions with winter rains are unsuitable. Fix: grow it where the winter season is reliably dry and irrigable.
In the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh, sowing in the second half of November gave good yields. The target everywhere is cool weather for growth and a dry, sunny period at maturity.
Trials compared 4-10 kg of seed per hectare; 6 kg/ha was judged sufficient. For a home bed, a thin line of seed along a shallow drill is enough.
The Madhya Pradesh trial applied 20 kg N and 40 kg P2O5 per hectare at sowing. Isabgol is a low-input crop.
Average seed yields are around 800-1,000 kg per hectare, rising to about 1,500 kg on medium-textured soils with good management.
Sow isabgol in the cool, dry winter for your own crop of psyllium seed.
As a rabi crop once the post-monsoon heat has eased, so seed germinates at about 20-25 °C. A Madhya Pradesh trial sowed in the second half of November; the crop then ripens in dry late-winter weather.
Ripe isabgol sheds seed easily when it is wetted by rain, heavy dew or damp, cloudy weather. Time sowing for a dry finish and harvest as soon as the crop is ripe.
No. The mucilage coat turns the seed into a sticky clump when wet. Sow dry seed, mixed with sand if you like, then irrigate lightly.
