Tatsoi Seeds

Tatsoi seed for cool-season growing

Tatsoi is a leafy Asian brassica grown for its compact rosette of smooth green leaves. This lot is sold simply as Tatsoi. The older infraspecific name Brassica rapa subsp. narinosa is treated as a synonym of the accepted species Brassica rapa. No named cultivar, colour strain, organic certification or fixed harvest schedule is claimed for this seed lot.

Also known as: Tat soi, Spoon mustard, Rosette bok choy, Tasai, Ta ke cai, Brassica narinosa, Brassica rapa subsp. narinosa and Brassica rapa var. rosularis.

Sowing

Sow into a clean, fine and well-drained seed-starting medium or directly into prepared garden soil when local conditions suit leafy brassicas. Cover the seed lightly, water gently and keep the seed zone evenly moist rather than saturated. For direct sowing, leave enough room to thin seedlings without disturbing the plants that remain. Planting dates and final spacing for brassicas vary with climate, cultivar, irrigation and the intended harvest stage.

Early care

Give emerging seedlings bright light and steady airflow. Thin crowded stands so leaves can dry after watering. Tatsoi is commonly treated as a cool-season crop, but the correct sowing window should be based on the grower’s frost dates, seasonal heat and local extension guidance. Harden indoor-raised seedlings gradually before transplanting.

Water, soil and feeding

Aim for steady growth rather than alternating dry soil with heavy watering. Check moisture below the surface before watering again, especially in containers. A fertile garden soil amended according to a local soil test is preferable to an unsupported universal fertilizer schedule. Avoid placing concentrated fertilizer directly against young roots. Mulch can help moderate soil moisture after plants are established, but keep it away from seedling stems and watch for slugs or other pests that shelter beneath it.

Monitoring the crop

Inspect the undersides of leaves and the centre of each rosette regularly. Remove badly damaged material and use locally approved brassica pest guidance when intervention is needed. Crop rotation, clean tools and removal of diseased debris can reduce the carry-over of some garden problems, but this packet is not represented as disease-resistant. If several plants are being compared, keep treatment, watering and light as consistent as practical so differences are easier to interpret.

Garden use and harvest

Plants may be observed as baby leaf or allowed to form a fuller rosette. Harvest method and timing depend on climate, plant spacing and the grower’s purpose; this listing does not promise a fixed number of days. Keep notes on sowing date, weather and plant response if the packet is used for a small variety trial.

Identity boundaries

Tatsoi is the product identity, while Brassica rapa is the accepted botanical species used for the database field. The lot has not been verified as a formally named cultivar. Photographs should therefore be described as exact product only when they show this SKU’s packet or documented lot; taxon photographs should remain labelled as reference images.

Packet care

Keep unused seed dry and protected from heat and humidity. Close the packet promptly after sowing. Germination and final plant form vary with seed handling and growing conditions.
