About this variety
Grow fennel from this packet of 200 seeds offered under the recorded product name Mantovano. The supported botanical identity is Foeniculum vulgare, an aromatic member of the carrot family, Apiaceae. Fennel develops finely divided foliage and compound clusters of small yellow flowers. This lot has not been linked to a verified Florence fennel cultivar, so the page does not promise a swollen leaf base, a particular bulb size, or a fixed harvest schedule.
Also known as: Fennel, Saunf, Variyali, Hinojo, Fenouil, Fenchel, Finocchio, Funcho, Rezene and Anethum foeniculum.
Product Overview: Kew's Plants of the World Online accepts Foeniculum vulgare as the species name. The Royal Horticultural Society distinguishes common or herb fennel from Florence or bulb fennel, even though both are often sold simply as fennel. The Mantovano name is therefore retained as the commercial lot name, while the practical guidance below stays at species level and avoids borrowing bulb traits from an unverified variety.
- Botanical name: Foeniculum vulgare Mill.
- Family: Apiaceae
- Plant character: Aromatic foliage with yellow flower umbels
- Packet quantity: 200 seeds
- Suitable setting: A sunny, sheltered bed or a large, well-drained container
Growing from Seed
When to sow: The Royal Horticultural Society recommends sowing fennel outdoors from mid-spring into its final growing place. Adjust that timing to local conditions: choose a period when severe cold has passed and the seedbed can stay lightly moist during germination. A warm, bright location helps young plants establish strongly.
How to sow: Sow about 1 cm (roughly 1/2 inch) deep. Thin seedlings progressively until the retained plants are at least 30 cm (1 foot) apart. This spacing gives the foliage room for light and air movement. Fennel forms a long taproot and dislikes established roots being disturbed, so direct sowing is the simplest approach. If starting indoors, use individual modules, keep seedlings in good light, and move them while still young with the root ball intact.
Light and soil: Select full sun and light, free-draining soil. Avoid a position that stays waterlogged after irrigation or rain. A large container can work when it is at least 30 cm wide and deep, has open drainage holes, and receives strong light. Water young plants regularly while they establish, then respond to soil conditions rather than following an inflexible schedule.
Ongoing care: Keep the planting area weeded while seedlings are small. Water at the soil surface and allow surplus water to drain. Slugs and snails may feed on young plants, so inspect seedlings rather than waiting for extensive damage. Fennel can self-seed freely where mature flower heads are left in place; remove unwanted heads before seed drops if volunteer seedlings would be inconvenient.
Harvest possibilities: Species-level fennel is grown for aromatic foliage, flowers, and mature seeds. Leaves can be gathered in small amounts as the plant becomes established. Seed heads ripen later in the growing cycle and can be collected when dry. Because the exact Mantovano cultivar identity is not established, do not use this listing as a guarantee that the plant will form a Florence-fennel bulb. Observe the actual plant and use locally appropriate culinary handling.
What You Receive: One packet containing 200 Mantovano Fennel seeds. The offer is for seeds only. The licensed gallery represents Foeniculum vulgare at plant, young-growth, and flowering stages; it does not document this individual seed lot.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should fennel be direct-sown?
Direct sowing is a good choice because fennel develops a taproot and established seedlings can respond poorly to disturbance. Indoor sowing is still possible in individual modules when seedlings are transplanted young and handled gently.
Does this fennel form a bulb?
Bulb formation is a trait of Florence fennel, generally treated as Foeniculum vulgare var. azoricum. The current Mantovano lot is verified only to species, so a bulb is not promised.
Can fennel grow in a container?
Yes. The RHS recommends a large container at least 30 cm wide and deep for common fennel. Use free-draining growing medium, full sun, and regular attention to moisture while the plant establishes.
