Sow in a clean, free-draining seed compost. The firm seeds can be soaked in water overnight before sowing. Cover lightly, keep the medium evenly moist and provide warmth. Move seedlings into individual pots when they are large enough to handle, then plant outside after frost risk has passed. Four o'clock grows in full sun or partial shade and performs best in fertile, well-drained soil with regular moisture while young.
Established plants tolerate short dry periods. In warm climates Mirabilis jalapa can behave as a perennial and form tuberous roots; in colder climates it is commonly grown as an annual. Plants branch freely and work well in borders or large containers. Fragrant flowers attract evening pollinators, while the dark ribbed seed-like fruits develop after flowering.
Botanical identity has been reviewed as Mirabilis jalapa L. The seeds and roots are not food and may cause irritation or illness if ingested, so keep the packet and plants away from children and pets. Supplied as seed for ornamental garden cultivation.
