About this variety
Gargamel (Solanum lycopersicum, family Solanaceae) is an indeterminate tomato with 70–120 g fruit whose deep purple, almost black shoulders fade to crimson red. The packet holds 10 seeds.
Also known as: Tomato, Tamatar (Hindi), Thakkali (Tamil, Malayalam), Tamata (Telugu), Tomate (Spanish, French, German, Portuguese), Pomodoro (Italian), Domates (Turkish), Pomidor (Polish), Fanqie (Chinese).
Fruit and plant
- Indeterminate vine that sets clusters of fruit through the season
- Medium fruit, 70–120 g, glossy, smooth and firm
- Purple-black shoulders over a crimson-red base
- Sweet and tangy with a slightly smoky note; for salads, garnish, sauces and roasting
Sow into soil at 16–29 °C
Tomato seed germinates well when the soil stays in its optimum range of 16–29 °C. At 20–30 °C seedlings typically appear in 6–8 days. Indoors, cover the seed with 3–6 mm of seed-starting mix. These figures are typical for the species, not a test of this packet.
Growing on
Sow indoors 6–8 weeks before the last expected frost and plant out once the soil has warmed, about 50 cm apart. Support the vine with a stake or cage. Grow in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil, water regularly and mulch.
When to expect fruit
The first fruit ripens about 75–80 days after transplanting, and the vine keeps cropping after that.
What you get
One packet of 10 seeds of Gargamel. Tomato seed typically stays usable for 4 years or more when kept cool, dark and dry, so seed you do not sow this season can wait for the next.
FAQ
When is a Gargamel tomato ripe?
When the base has turned crimson red under the dark shoulders. The dark shoulder colour appears before the fruit is ripe, so judge by the lower half.
How big are Gargamel fruits?
They are medium, 70–120 g, and come in clusters rather than singly, which suits fresh eating and roasting whole.
