Germination temperature
Cool to mild. The USDA manual advises avoiding germination in hot conditions for Vaccinium seed.

Cranberry seed is slow and fussy: it must be sown on the surface in light, on a very acidic, peaty mix, and the plants need a cold winter to fruit. This guide covers what works and why cranberry is very hard to grow in the Indian plains.
Cool to mild. The USDA manual advises avoiding germination in hot conditions for Vaccinium seed.
Surface only. Press the seed in and do not cover it.
Slow and uneven; allow several weeks.
Essential: cranberry seed failed to germinate without light in USDA-cited trials.
A cold, moist period before sowing is commonly used; evidence for cranberry itself is mixed.
Sow in trays, prick out into small pots of acidic mix, plant out after the first year.
If you extract your own seed, blend ripe berries in water in a few 5-second bursts and float off the pulp, repeating until the seed is clean. Seed is tiny: about 1.09 million cleaned seeds per kilogram. Seed stored 30 days at room temperature still germinated when given light; keep longer-term seed dry and cool.
Not needed.
The USDA Woody Plant Seed Manual describes the evidence on pre-treatment for cranberry as inconclusive. A cold, moist rest in the refrigerator does no harm: in a study on the related lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea), 8 weeks of cold stratification gave the highest and most even germination. Mix the seed with damp peat in a sealed, labelled bag.
Not needed in water. Advanced growers sometimes soak Vaccinium seed in gibberellic acid (200-1,000 ppm); cranberry seed treated with 500 ppm reached 69% germination after 20 days even in the dark.
Keep trays cool to mild and out of heat. In India, sowing is only realistic in the cool season, in the hills, or indoors in a cool room; hot weather works against germination.
Sow on the surface and press lightly so the seed touches the mix. Do not cover; the USDA manual recommends surface sowing under mist for Vaccinium.
Very acidic and peaty: pH 4.0-5.2, as given by NC State Extension, for example sphagnum peat with some sand. Ordinary garden soil or compost is usually too alkaline.
Keep the surface constantly damp with a mister or a clear cover. Use rainwater or other low-mineral water: UMass Extension warns that alkaline water steadily pushes pH back up.
Give several hours of bright light every day, for example a bright windowsill out of direct midday sun or a grow light. Seed kept in the dark does not germinate.
Untreated seed is slow and irregular; leave trays for several weeks before discarding. Seedlings are very small and grow slowly at first.
Prick seedlings out into small pots of the same acidic mix once they can be handled; roots are tender. Plant out about 30 cm (1 ft) apart in full sun, in acidic, organic soil that stays moist but drains.
Cranberry spreads by low runners; UMass reports 15-30 cm (6-12 in) of runner growth by midsummer from vines planted in late spring. Mulch to keep roots cool and moist.
Plants need roughly 3 months at 0-7 °C (32-45 °F) to grow, flower and fruit well. Protect them from drying winter wind with a mulch such as pine boughs.
Cause: seed covered with mix or kept in the dark, or allowed to dry. Fix: surface-sow, give daily light and keep the surface damp.
Cause: chlorosis from soil or water that is too alkaline. Fix: keep pH below 5, add sulfur if needed and water with rainwater.
Cause: heat and drought; NC State lists cranberry as heat- and drought-intolerant. Fix: grow only where summers are cool, in part shade during heat and never dry.
Cause: no proper winter chill, or too few pollinating insects. Fix: give a cold winter rest and make sure bees can reach the flowers.
Cranberry is a bog plant of eastern Canada and the north-eastern USA, rated for USDA zones 3-7. The hot Indian plains provide neither the cool summer nor the 3-month cold winter it needs, so success there is very unlikely; cool hill gardens give the only realistic chance.
Seed-grown plants differ from their parents, which is why commercial growers use cuttings. UMass Extension calls starting from seed an exercise in extreme patience.
Once you have a seedling you like, multiply it from stem cuttings; cranberry roots easily at any time of year, and the USDA manual uses 1,000 ppm IBA.
Commercial bogs are flooded, but garden plants only need consistently moist, acidic, organic soil in full sun.
Try cranberry seed on a bright, acidic peat tray if you can give the plants a cool summer and a cold winter.
Only with difficulty. Cranberry is heat-intolerant and needs about three months at 0-7 °C (32-45 °F) each winter, so it is very hard to grow in the Indian plains. Cool hill areas give a better chance.
The most common reasons are covering the seed, keeping it in the dark, letting it dry or using a mix that is not acidic. Sow on the surface of moist, acidic peat in daily light.
Seed is the slow route. Rooted cuttings often flower the year after planting and fruit by the second year; seedlings take longer and vary in fruit.
No. A bed or large pot of moist, acidic, organic soil (pH 4.0-5.2) in full sun is enough for garden plants.
