About this variety
Rudraksha is the established trade name for a tropical tree in the genus Elaeocarpus. The packet identity Elaeocarpus ganitrus is retained here because it is the name under which these seeds are supplied; that name is currently treated as a synonym of Elaeocarpus sphaericus.
Also known as: Rudraksh, Rudraksham, Utrasum bead tree and Elaeocarpus sphaericus.
The mature tree develops glossy foliage, small flowers and blue drupes containing a hard, deeply textured stone. Those dried stones are traditionally used as beads and decorative objects.
The species is suited to warm, humid tropical or subtropical conditions. Choose a sheltered position with fertile, well-drained soil. Young plants benefit from consistent moisture, but containers and beds should drain freely rather than remain waterlogged. In cooler regions, raise seedlings under protection and avoid exposing tender growth to frost.
Rudraksha seed has a hard outer covering and can germinate slowly. Soak the clean seed before sowing, place it in a clean, free-draining propagation medium and keep it warm and evenly moist. Do not bury it excessively. Use individual pots where possible so developing roots can be moved with minimal disturbance. Germination time varies, so keep the pot labelled and continue steady care rather than discarding it early.
After emergence, provide bright filtered light and gentle air movement. Pot seedlings on as roots fill the container, then acclimate them gradually before outdoor planting.
You will receive seeds only; no bead, fruit, seedling or growing container is included.
