About this variety
Grow Melia azedarach, commonly called chinaberry, Persian lilac, or white cedar, from seed. This fast-growing deciduous tree has feathery compound foliage, fragrant lilac-colored spring flowers, and round yellow fruits that may remain on bare branches. It is primarily grown as an ornamental shade tree in climates suited to the species.
Also known as: Chinaberry, Persian lilac, White cedar, Bead tree, Cape lilac, Texas umbrella tree, Bakain (Hindi), Drek (Punjabi) and Malai vembu (Tamil).
For sowing, soak the hard seeds in clean water for about 24 hours. Plant them approximately 6 mm deep in a well-draining mix, keep the medium gently moist, and provide warmth and bright light. Germination may take several weeks or longer, so avoid disturbing the pot too soon. Gradually acclimate established seedlings to direct sun and protect young growth from hard frost.
Natural seed lots vary, and germination depends on seed condition, temperature, moisture, and grower care.
Important: the fruits and other plant parts can be toxic if ingested. Keep the plant and seeds away from children and pets and do not use them as food. Melia azedarach can also behave invasively in some regions. Check local guidance before planting outdoors.
